More than a teacher : A class teacher’s experience
Being a teacher itself is a very big responsibility, we don't only teach but we deal with each and every individual with different thinking, different backgrounds and different energy. You have to teach them, solve their doubts, solve their fights and many more things.
And, it becomes an extra responsibility when you are a class teacher of any class. As a class teacher of class 5 where I have 19 students in my class my day starts from assembly where I have to make sure if they are standing in proper line, if they have to present in assembly I have to check if they are prepared for it. I have to ensure that they are not arguing with each other, and furthermore it goes in the class where I have to make them sit in a proper way, seeing every aspect if they can sit together and not have any issue with each other. Are they able to see the board and don't have problems in writing and listening?
Students have different expectations from their class teacher. They know that this is the individual who has to solve all our problems, either inside the classroom or outside the classroom.
I have to see if the material in the class is enough for all the students or not.
Every day I have to listen to one thing for sure:”ma’am mai iske sath baith jau” or “mam mujhe iske sath bilkul nhi baithna hai aap meri jaggh badal dijiye”.
As this is the starting of the class they have to tell the first experience they got in the morning.
Sometimes they have just seen an accident or sometimes they fought with their siblings, sometimes they just didn't want to come to school but were forcefully sent by their parents. In all of these you have to make sure that they don't loose the most important thing: the topic, the classwork for the subject material.
This doesn't end at the first period, you are just going to enter a different class and one student will come from class 5 and tell you “ mam chaliye A ne X ko mara or uska gaal lal ho gya hai” .Of course you have to go and listen to both parties. Additionally, if they are not happy with other teachers they will come to you and will ask can you please talk to that sir or mam.
Once, a very interesting incident happened in my class. One of my students made imaginary friends by himself and he was talking to them. And it didn't stop there, he wanted to make them sit in the class with him and I didn't want him to feel bad by stopping his imagination at that time, I just gave a space to his imaginary friends in the classroom but one other student came by touching the side where his imaginary friends were sitting and he got angry, then I talked with him that the friends are imaginary right and no one is able to see them so just because of that he touched the place.
In fact, other class students will come and tell you mam your students were doing something in the ground, or your students have taken something from our class. And when they leave from the school then also the work of class teacher doesn't end, she will see the class and every day she will find one student has left his lunch box, another has left her sweater, one another has left all.the notebooks and I will.keep all of them in place. Being a class teacher seems like being a parent who is just overseeing her students, more worried about their activities, what if they hurt each other and it feels a little more extra responsibility to make them a responsible human being handling their different emotions, happiness, sadness, nervousness, anger etc. But at the same time it makes you proud when “your students” do well, they get praised , they do good. At the end of the day, their small achievements feel like my big victories, teaching them made me realise that they are teaching me too, they are teaching me patience, they are teaching me how to be happy with so many problems.
